Training Programs
Obedience Training
2 Week On Leash Program
During this time your dog will learn recall, place, crate, sit, down, heel, walk on lead, whoa (upland dogs) and work on impulse control through a combination of marker training and leash work.
4 Week Off Leash Program
Pre req for this program is the 2 week on leash program. In this program we expand on what the dog learned in it’s first 2 weeks on leash and begin to introduce the E-collar. By the end of this program you should expect a well mannered dog that is under control and ready for off leash freedom.
Bird and Gun Introduction
This is a 3 week program designed to give your dog lots of positive bird exposure while gradually overlaying gunfire with the joy and excitement that the birds give the dog. Gun intro should never be rushed, because it is very hard to bring a dog back from being gun shy if not impossible in some cases. Better to start them off on the right foot then deal with a mess later down the line.
Basic Hunting Program
Pre req: 2 Week on Leash Program or equivalent training. Basic Hunting can be for Upland, Waterfowl or both. This program gets your dog ready for it’s first hunting season and includes the Bird and Gun Intro and the Off Leash Program.
For upland dogs we work on developing bird drive, retrieve drive, hunting pattern, intro to tracking, in the field handling and experience working in different types of covers and water. Depending on the age and maturity of pointing dogs we may work on steadiness to flush.
For waterfowl dogs we work on developing retrieve drive, marking, manners in a blind, boat exposure, water introduction and duck calls.
The Basic Hunting Program is typically a 6 week program.
Intermediate Upland Program
Pre req: Basic Hunting Program or equivalent training and generally 1 full season of hunting.
In this program we begin to work on getting your dog “Whoa broke”, Steady to Wing and Shot and begin honoring other dogs. Dogs will also go through a trained retrieve program during this time.
Advanced Upland Program
Pre req: Intermediate Upland Program or equivalent training and dogs are typically 2+ years old.
The Advanced program is your fully finished dog, Steady to Wing Shot and Fall, Honoring other dogs points and retrieves, and proofing the trained retrieve on different objects / game birds, on land and in the water.
Wild Bird Camp!
Wild Bird Camp is a 3 month program from July 1st through the last full week in September taking your dog right into hunting season. Dogs of all levels are welcome and training will be tailored to their needs / skill level. Your dog will be run on native Woodcock and the “King of the woods” the Ruffed Grouse, providing them numerous contacts and learning how to handle these cagey birds.
Pre Season Tune UP
The end of August and into September is a great time to get your dog back in shape with a conditioning program and working on steadiness for the upcoming season. We will be running on wild birds as much the weather permits us. With a couple weeks in the north woods running Grouse and Woodcock your dog will be primed and ready to go for the season!
